Vasiliy Lomachenko returned to the ring for the first time since December 2021 and faced Jamaine Ortiz. The 34-year-old had to fight his way through. Finally, he teased a comeback that left fans on their feet.
The former lightweight champion defeated Ortiz by unanimous decision Saturday night at the Hulu Theater in New York's Madison Square Garden. The results were 115-113, 116-112 and 117-111. This last score was challenged byTerence Crawfordand other professionals watching the fight.
After the match, undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney entered the ring to face Lomachenko. After defeating George Kambosos Jr. twice, Haney is poised to take on one of the best in the division. "Anytime, Anywhere" was the motto.
"I don't care about the place. Absolutely," Lomachenko said. “I will be prepared for any of his terms. let me explain (Haney is) the undisputed champion. He's the A-side. I need this moment more than he does.”

Ortiz started the fight hot. He dominated the opening minutes, a possible sign of rust for Lomachenko. He passed Lomachenko several times. In the fourth round, he landed 17 shots to Lomachenko's eight. Lomachenko showed signs of brilliance at times, but Ortiz was too much in the first half.

In the second half of the fight, Lomachenko was killed by the crowd. "The Matrix" managed to fight back, scoring 102 in the 10th round to Ortiz's 104. Jabs and inside kicks were the name of the game. In the end, the fight belonged to everyone. The judges saw enough to give Lomachenko the win.
VonCompuBox, Lomachenko landed 125 of 571 shots while Ortiz landed 122 of 607. After a slow start, Lomachenko landed double digit shots seven times. Ortiz landed in double digits five times.
Lomachenko defeated Richard Commey in the previous fight. He then returned to Ukraine to fight Russian aggression before fighting that fight. Heavyweight champion and fellow Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk was part of a passionate New York crowd cheering him on Saturday. With the win, Lomachenko is one step away from returning to the top.
