What you need to know
– If you are two consenting adults, you don't have to bribe anyone, the police have absolutely no right to arrest you, ask for your ID or harass/threaten you in any other way. Sexual intimacy for heterosexual unmarried couples is not a crime in Sri Lanka. Don't blackmail yourself.
– If you go to an unreliable, unverified hotel, you are setting yourself up for failure. They may ask for your IDs as a form of blackmail, they may have hidden cameras or worse. Always choose a safe and reputable location. Honestly, you won't find a safe and reputable place for less than about Rs. 4000 in Colombia. Unless it's your friend's house.
-Even a fancy hotel may ask for your ID to make a copy at check-in, but that's about it. I can't keep it or look for it later. I also can't ask you if you're married, if your family knows where you are, etc.
If you have money(Rs. 12.000 – Rs. 30.000)
Any 5 star hotel or international hotel chain will be happy to provide you with a safe, clean room for a period of 22 hours. Of course you have to pay, everything from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 30,000 per night including breakfast and full use of hotel facilities. Here we have a complete list of 5*, 4*, boutique, business and budget hotels that can be sorted.Keep an eye out for discounts on sites like booking.com and you might even get cheap hotels for as little as Rs. 8000 per night.
Inns(Oko Rs. 4000 - Rs. 8000)
Colombo is really stepping up its hostel game. Lately we have been visiting many beautiful, chic and friendly hostels with cheap dorms and private rooms in central Colombo locations. The best part is that they are reasonable and don't ask annoying questions, but we heard that they might not be too welcoming to local couples looking for suspiciously short stays. It might not be super romantic to dine with a bunch of sun-kissed backpackers, but neither is a room on the hourly rate in Mount Lavinia. For a private room, you can pay anything from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 10,000.
Airbnb (around Rs 4000 and above)
Airbnb is an option if you don't feel uncomfortable staying in someone else's house or guesthouse. If you're looking for your own space (especially for a weekend or a few days), Airbnb is often a reasonable option where you can share a room or even an apartment or house for a period of time. This is especially good if you want to cook, watch TV, etc. We've mentioned a fewnicer high endAirbnb-ain the center of Colombo here. We also received an answer fromMahasen iz Foozoa, which has excellent reviews and is even LGBT friendly!
Cheaper Hotels (Rs 3500 and above)
Moteli RelaxOn- This is a series of converted houses around Colombo that offer short stays of around 3 hours and around Rs. 2500. The YAMU user has vouched for their safety, but apparently they keep one ID for the duration of their stay.
Solid Hotels - This chain has locations throughout the city, inBambalapitiyaUWelawatta. It is about Rs. 4000 per room. Definitely a little dirty, but not suspicious per se.
Signature Hotels - Another chain like Solid, Signature Hotels has locations around central Colombo, including Carwil Lane, Shrubbery Gardens and 5th Lane. Prices start from Rs. 5000 Rs. 6000 per night.
Hotel Juliana– Another super central option, here you can get a double room for Rs 5000 from 12 noon to 12 noon. They charge the same price even for shorter stays. This is without a doubt one of the toughest hotels in central Colombo (shabby enough to conveniently cover your license plate in case you meet someone who isn't your wife), but they havea good Korean restaurant.
Grand Oriental Hotel– A beautiful old building from 1837, steeped in history and overlooking the harbour, the GOH is more or less close to the Dutch hospital etc, but quite dated. You also don't get your money's worth in Rs. 11,000 more for a room, unless you really like Chekov.
Grand hotel Concord- Located in Dehiwala, this hotel is very nice from outside and they give you rooms till 10 pm for around Rs. 6000. You can do it shorter, but the price is the same.
Hotel Janaki- Dirty but safe, Hotel Janaki is located in the heart of Colombo 5. Room rates start around Rs. 7000 and up for a double room. They also have a pool, in case you feel the drop.
Hotel Saffier- Down in Welawatta, Sapphire is on Galle Road and relatively central. Prices start around Rs. 10,000 up.
Hotel Nippon– Nippon is a beautiful old building, recently renovated and reopened. Prices for a double room with a balcony are around HRK 20. 10,000 more, but worth it for its historical value. There is alsoseveral good restaurants downstairs.
Pearl City Hotel / Pearl Grand Hotel- Right in the heart of Colpetty, Pearl Grand offers air-conditioned double rooms for Rs. 13,000 for the whole night or Rs. 12,000 until 6 o'clock. Which kind makes no sense. Pearl City will do the same for Rs. 10,800.
Booking websites
Yoho shrimp– This is an easy booking site with rooms all over Colombo (and the country). They maintain basic standards of cleanliness, AC, wifi and breakfast and the prices are quite low starting from Rs. 3000 to Rs. 7000 for private rooms.
Reservation. com- An international booking site that lets you sort by a range of variables like price, date, room type, availability, location, etc. Beware though, prices below Rs. 2500 generally indicates dormitories.
Boekingen.lk– This local booking site allows you to sort by price, and registered places are pre-screened so you know they're legit.
And that's our list. It's a work in progress, so if you know of places that are cheap, clean, and legit, please comment below so other users can find them. In the meantime, we hope this was helpful. Be responsible and take care!
