COLOMBO (News 1e) - Sri Lanka plans to ease restrictions on all marriages between Sri Lankans and foreigners.
PSP Abeywardena, the country's chief registrar, noted that Circular No:-18/2021 on the registration of marriages between foreigners and Sri Lankans will be repealed.
According to this circular, a health certificate is required to confirm the health status of the foreigner concerned.
In addition, according to the circular, a security clearance report showing that the foreign national has not been convicted of a criminal offense is also required.
However, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena noted that those restrictions should be eased.
Accordingly, the Secretary General's Department has notified the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health to introduce alternative procedures related to the Health and Safety Check Report.
Secretary General P.S.P. Abeywardena noted that the Attorney General's Department was also aware of these developments.
Any Sri Lankan who wishes to marry a foreigner will have to wait for a security clearance report from the Ministry of Defense before proceeding with marriage registration, according to the Registrar General's 2021 circular.
Those restrictions should be eased, according to the country's headquarters.
