»Visa extension for former Sri Lankan citizens and family members
If you wish to extend your stay in Sri Lanka, you must apply to extend your visa. An extension may or may not be granted depending on the reason for the extension and whether the Ministry of Immigration and Emigration is satisfied that the applicant intends to return to his country after his stay in Sri Lanka.
If you are applying for a tourist visa extension, the maximum duration of the extension you can apply for is six months. Other visas are extended depending on the reason and duration recommended by the relevant Sri Lankan ministry or organization.
We strongly advise applicants to apply for a visa extension well in advance of the expiry date to avoid fines and inconvenience. Overstaying a visa is a violation of visa conditions that can lead to refusal of extension, detention and deportation from Sri Lanka.
Visa extension applications can be made at our Immigration Service Center in Colombo or at the Immigration and Emigration Department in Battaramulla.
