The best beaches in Sri Lanka

Enjoy finding the best beachesSri Lanka! Use this comprehensive travel guide to find the beach that's right for you, including crowd, surf and season ratings.

1. Wijaya Beach – A beautiful beach in Sri Lanka

Our absolute favorite beach of all the beaches we saw in Sri Lanka is Wijaya Beach. This beautiful white sandy beach is surrounded by hanging palm trees and is lapped by crystal clear sea. You really feel like a little piece of paradise!

Large rocks and a coral reef form a natural pool, making it a perfect place for swimming. In addition, it is a great place to see giant tortoises; watch out for their little heads poking out of the water for some air.

After a wonderfully relaxing day at the beach, head to one of the beach bars and restaurants in the area. Enjoy snacks and drinks while watching the sun go down.

  • Season:From December to April and from July to September
  • Employed:A little, but there is always a place to sit on the beach
  • surfing:Not great, better for a relaxing swim

2. Mirissa beach in Sri Lanka

Mirissa attracts all kinds of people, from advanced surfers to avid sunbathers. From allSri Lankabeaches, the most famous being the Mirissa beach; it is known for its excellent surfing, restaurants, bars and diving.

The beach itself stretches for 2 km, and in the middle is the amazing Parrot Rock. On the left side of the rock you will find the best place for diving. On the right you will find surfers of all ages and abilities enjoying the incredible waves.

Parrot Rock (although you won't find any parrots!) is a great thing to do while visiting Mirissa Beach. The rock is in front of the beach and offers a beautiful view of the palm forest below. Since the rock is in the sea, you will need to research the tide times to cross it safely.

  • Season:November to April and August to October
  • Employed:Quite popular. Parrot Rock is especially busy at sunset. We recommend visiting at sunrise (tide permitting) for a quieter viewing experience.
  • surfing:Good surf on the right side of Parrot Rock.

3. Secret beach in Mirissa

The secret beach is one of the most hiddenSri Lankabeaches and an absolute gem! Although it is no longer a secret, it is a little harder to find. This makes it feel much quieter and more isolated.

You'll find it tucked away by the beach, with a small bar and a local lady selling coconuts. It's quite an adventure in itself to get there as you have to follow a 2km steep path across the headland (takes about 30 minutes from Mirissa main beach).

When you get there you will see that the cape is divided into three small beaches. Each one is a little different and is a great place to snorkel and watch the sunset. If you arrive early enough in the morning, you can probably enjoy this beautiful ocean paradise to yourself!

  • Season:November to April and August to October
  • Busy: A little busy later in the day, but come early so you can enjoy it yourself.
  • surfing:It's not great, it's better to paddle in rock pools and enjoy diving.

4. Hiriketiya-strand in Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya Beach, also called Hiri Beach, is becoming more and more famous for its waves. Some say it is fast becoming a surfing paradiseSri Lanka! It's easy to see why Horseshoe Bay is so popular, surrounded by dense palm groves and close to trendy restaurants where you can get a delicious breakfast. Surfers from all over the world flock to this place, bringing with them the surfer, bohemian atmosphere that can be seen throughout Hiriketia.

Although the water is busy, there are still places to swim or watch surfers catch the best wave of the day from the comfort of the shore. It is best to rent a board and join the courses at one of the surf schools on the beach.

Advice:After enjoying the waves of Hiriketiya, head to nearby Dikwella, where you'll find swings on the palm-lined beach to enjoy the sunset.

  • Season:From November to April (better for smaller waves for beginners) and from August to October (bigger waves for more advanced surfers)
  • Employed:A little, especially with morning surfers. Come at dawn for the quietest time of day.
  • surfing:Great surfing - one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka!

5. Trincomalee-pramen

Trincomalee Beach and Nilaveli Beach are completely different from other beaches in Sri Lanka. Because of their off-the-beaten-path location on the east coast, you'll find these beaches almost empty. In addition, the scenery is breathtaking.

Trincomalee Beach is a bit busier, full of traditional, colorful fishing boats and locals casting their nets just along the shore. Here you will also find several nice bars on the beach, where you can sit on the swings and choose from a number of refreshing cocktails.

Rent a motorbike and just 10 minutes drive along a small sandy track you will find Nilaveli Beach. This beach is a long, endless line of white sand backed by shallow, crystal blue water that looks almost too good to be true. Here, time stands still, and cows slowly roam the beach, and there is almost no one around.

For the best snorkeling, hop on a boat from Nilaveli Beach to Pigeon Island (just 10 minutes). This paradise island has some of the best diving spotsSri Lanka!

Advice:From March to August you have the opportunity to see dolphins and whales during their migration.

  • Season:from February to August
  • Employed:Calm. If you choose a place far away on Nilaveli beach, you might not see anyone but cows and fish all day long on the beach - bliss!
  • surfing:Not for surfing, the water is shallow and clear, perfect for swimming and diving.

6. Tangalle-pramen

Hidden away on the southeast coast, Tangalle is one of those Sri Lankan beaches made for paradise seekers. It's a little harder to get to because it's dislocated than usualSri Lanka itinerarybut it's worth it! This means that few tourists visit Tangalle, making for a quieter experience (you'll find that the area contains only a few visible resorts).

The best hidden beach in Sri Lanka

The traditional fishing village is home to the friendliest people and beautiful white sand beaches, surrounded by turquoise ocean, big foaming waves and palm trees and mangrove forests. Because of the reefs and rocks, there is a strong current and high waves, which makes Tangalle Beach unsuitable for swimming and surfing. However, the long beach is perfect for walking, relaxing and a fantastic place to watch the sunset.

Enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature, sleep in the shade of the trees, and fill up on fresh coconuts from vendors passing by. A trip to Tangalle is an absolute must on your Sri Lanka tour!

Advice:Tiha beach is the best beach in the area, quiet, with a perfect landscape - one of the most wonderfulSri Lankabeach.

  • Season:from November to April and from May to October
  • Employed:Very quiet!
  • surfing:Not for surfing. Swimming can also be difficult here, especially in September and October.

7. Koggala-strand

Koggala is a relatively unknown beach paradise deep in the southwestSri Lanka, which is located betweenUnawatunaUAnd the smell. White sand and few people on the beach make Koggala Beach a great location to stay during your trip. Spend your days leaving your first footprints in the sand and spotting a fantastic variety of wildlife, from colorful fish to turtles and even small sharks!

You should also take some time to witness the traditional practice of pole fishing, which still exists here. Here, local fishermen sit high on makeshift bamboo poles and fish in the waters near the beach. They sit there for hours under the blazing hot sun, showing tremendous strength and dedication to their work.

Koggala is also known among Sri Lankan beaches as a good place for surfing, although the strong current makes it better for advanced surfers.

Advice:Koggala has a small reserve of rainforest around the lake (near the beach). Here you can discover mangroves, small islands and an abundance of wildlife. Join a boat trip and learn more about nature.

  • Season:From December to April and from July to September
  • Employed:Calm
  • surfing:Well, better for advanced surfers. Quite windy, so it is also suitable for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

8. Arugam-baai

Arugam Bay, located on the east coast, is truly the best of them allSri Lankasurfing beaches, which are increasingly popular among surfers around the world. International surfing competitions are actually held here. Because every day brings great waves, many surfers make Arugam Bay their home during the peak surfing period (April to September).

Despite its fame, the area still retains that secluded beach feel, with wooden shacks lining the beach and groves of palm trees. However, it also has fantastic restaurants, cafes and bars near the centre, where you can find many international dishes and bohemian outdoor terraces.

Advice:Arugam Bay is not far from some of the best national parks in the worldSri Lanka, I like itJalaUUdawalawe. This is why you will find many tour companies offering jeep safaris where you can see elephants, monkeys and even the elusive leopard!

  • Best time to visit:April to September (note that some hotels are closed outside of this prime surf season).
  • Employed:Popular in high season
  • surfing:The best waves of all beaches in Sri Lanka!

9. Unawatuna-strand

Swaying palm trees, a golden sandy beach and dozens of simple beach bars and restaurants; this is the beauty of Unawatuna. This beach is by far the most popular beach on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. However, this does not necessarily mean that it is as busy as what you can see in such countriesThailandfromSpain. Due to the wide open spaces in Sri Lanka, you will always find a place to relax.

Moreover, the village of Unawatuna has a relaxed atmosphere, where the days pass slowly in the haze of coconuts, good food and refreshing morning swims. The beach is in a protected bay, so it is very safe for swimming.

Advice:Search Google Maps for the "Dream Cabana" in Unawatuna and you'll find the city's Instagram hotspot: an incredible beach swing hanging high from a tall palm tree jutting out onto the beach.

  • Season:from November to April
  • Employed:Popular in high season as this part of the south coast is very accessible from Colombo.
  • surfing:Possible, but not great. The sheltered bay is better for swimming and resting.

10. Hikkaduwa-strand

Hikkaduwa Beach is one of themSri Lankabeaches located on the west coast and closest to Colombo. Because of its west-facing position, the sunsets at Hikkaduwa Beach are out of this world; nothing beats seeing the sun melt on the horizon line in a warm evening sky.

During the day you can see amazing coral reefs, which makes Hikkaduwa popular for snorkeling and diving. Among the reefs and shipwrecks you will see a great variety of wildlife, from small tropical fish to larger sharks. Giant turtles also swim very close to the beach, giving travelers a unique opportunity to see these incredible aquatic giants up close. Please always respect the turtles, never touch them and observe them from a distance so as not to stress them.

Advice:If you're going to sleep at Hikkaduwa Beach, stay a little outside the city as tourism can be a bit crazy in the center.

  • Season:from November to April
  • Employed:Yes, famous for turtles and close to Colombo.
  • surfing:Great surfing!

    Bok,
I like beaches where I can swim, snorkel, dive... I like an evening with a beer and maybe a good view of the sunset. I don't want it to be crowded, and basic food suits me. By the end of the year I plan to retire and spend as much time as possible on the beach... at 45 I am quite healthy and fit.
Can you suggest some beaches and the order in which I should plan, assuming I start around November 2020?
